Edgar – Security Solutions. Monday, June 12th 1420hrs

Day by day, I was trying to view the prescribed time off my feet as a blessing. For someone who hated to sit still and feel helpless, this was incredibly difficult. However, the excess of downtime was helping me to gain a better understanding of just how busy and potentially lucrative this sudden career with Blue Moon could be. There were signs of it all over my inbox and voicemail, even after Poppy had helped me to weed out the loonies.

In the twenty-four hours that had passed since Poppy left, I’d received four more emails and another phone call. The voice message was absolutely nuts. It involved a woman who claimed she could walk back and forth in time using her laundry room as a portal back to the fourteenth century. But two of the new emails looked promising. One was concerning a farm in western Virginia that was seeing multiple chickens butchered once a week by what looked like a dog walking on two legs; the remains of the chickens were being taken to a large hole in the ground behind the farmland property. Another one was a basic Bigfoot story coming out of West Virginia. And while I was sure neither of these were actually supernatural in nature—neither phantom nor cryptid—the would-be clients were providing lots of details and insights that made them seem legitimate.

I was reading about the supposed Bigfoot story when I heard an approaching engine coming up my driveway, accentuated by the soft crunching of gravel under tires. I stepped away from the story and walked to the front door. I opened it just in time to see the same beat-up GMC as before. It had once been green but now had a weird, tainted yellow hue to it. I could see Whistler through the windshield, giving me a little nod of acknowledgement.

I also noticed something big in the back of his truck—something standing up taller than the cab. Whatever it was, it was made of wood and box-shaped. As I made my way out onto the porch to greet him, I noticed that there were two things in the back of the truck, not just one. They were pushed together, standing side by side. It was two of the same item, and when I walked slightly to the left to see them from another angle, I realized that they were bookcases. More than that, they looked antiquated and quite solid. Beautiful specimens, really.

Whistler got out of the truck, bringing out three small carboard boxes with him. “I had more than I remembered,” he said, looking down to the stack of boxes in his hands. “I’ll have you set up and ready to go in just an hour or two.”

“Do you need some help?”

“My toolbox is in the back of the truck if you want to grab that.”

He set the boxes down and started studying the front of my house. I assumed he was looking for the best place to set up the first camera.
